James Marter for United States Senate
James Marter for United States Senate
My opponent, Senator Mark Kirk, gave us another reason why he is out of touch with the people of Illinois. Aside from insulting my one quarter Polish ancestry (my great-grandmother who came to America from Poznan, Poland), the Senator has managed to insult just about everyone with his remarks at a manufacturer’s group meeting. Apparently, he has never met any hard working people of other ancestries. We are a state of hard working people of all backgrounds. It is not one ethnic group that attracts manufacturers to come to Illinois. People of all races, ethnicities and cultures are valued in this state. Perhaps the senator should spend more time here so he can meet the people who keep Illinois thriving despite “high costs and corruption…”.
It is unfortunate the senator felt comfortable mocking our fellow Americans and neighbors in the southern states. They, like many of my friends and family, are all avid outdoors-men and women here in Illinois who happen to enjoy hunting a few weeks of the year in this highly regulated and taxed activity. They are the primary conservators and protectors of our natural resources in Illinois. It is evident by his numerous votes for gun restrictions that he isn’t familiar with those who like “huntin”.
Being long gone from Illinois these last 15 years inside the beltway of Washington D.C., he has become so out of touch that he’s unaware of the dash to exit the State both from the employer base and the people of Illinois leaving the state for freer pastures in record numbers. How utterly shameless was it for the senator to ask those manufacturers why they continue to operate in Illinois despite our reputation for high costs, unions and corruption as if that is acceptable to him. The people of Illinois deserve better.

Homer 33C joins Hour of Code movement
Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C students demonstrated their 21st century learning skills recently, participating in a global Hour of Code movement.
Students spent at least one hour writing computer code the week of Dec. 7-13 in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. They were among tens of millions students in 180+ countries to participate.
“We started the morning off with the Hour of Code,” said Schilling third grade teacher Tasha Ohotzke. “It was a huge success. Many students were writing 10 lines of code or more by the time we finished. I even had one student that wrote 22 lines of code.”
The Hour of Code movement was organized by Code.org, a public 501c3 non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools and increasing participation by women.
The goal is to demystify code and show students that anybody can learn the basics.
“Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science,” according to Hour of Code organizers. “It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity.”
Homer School District 33C is at the forefront of 21st century learning, launching a Preparing Future Ready Students initiative in June 2013. With the community’s support, the district has been enhancing its collection of 21st century learning tools, including Chromebooks, iPads, laptops, PCs, 3D printers and Spheros.
By 2017, the district hopes to equip every student in grades 3-8 with a Chromebook.
“Our goal is to prepare students for the rigors of a technologically advanced world,” said Arlene Siefert, the district’s Director of Technology.
That means giving them the right tools to build their critical thinking skills, expand their communications skills and become independent problem solvers, added Superintendent Kara Coglianese.
“Through collaborative efforts representing ALL community stakeholder groups, Homer 33C is committed to empowering student success by graduating responsible, globally-aware citizens who are passionate life-long learners, creative thinkers and independent problem-solvers,” she said. “In addition, we are committed to providing technology that enhances learning, expands communication and promotes data-driven decision-making.”
During an Hour of Code session at Hadley Middle School on Dec. 9, fifth graders challenged themselves to build a Star Wars galaxy with code.
“I think it’s fun,” said one fifth grader as she programed a droid’s movement with a few clicks on her keyboard.
“Some levels are difficult,” said another student. “But some aren’t.”
Technology plays an important role in today’s learning, said teacher Celeste Rupsis, because it fosters critical thinking and problem-solving.
“It forces them to think sequentially and logically,” she added.

The Isis papers: a masterplan for consolidating power
How ISIS plan to ‘rule the world’: Terror group’s aims and techniques revealed in secret dossier
The dossier reveals how experienced jihadi warriors only need to take ‘refresher courses’ of 15 days every year to stay combat-ready.
It states: “The mujahid through that camp comes upon the latest arts of using weapons, military planning and military technologies currently put forth in battles and weapons whose use by the enemy are anticipated, along with detailed commentary on the technologies of enemy use of the weapons, areas of their use, their strength and how the soldiers of the state can take advantage of them.”

Leadership
“(The military leader) should not be discouraged, having doubts, hesitating or cowardly because he is the example that the mujahid summons whenever the furnace of the battle flares up.”

Gold and oil
ISIS helps fund its campaign of terror with illicit sales of oil from the refineries it controls and the sale of artefacts from important archaeological sites in the region.

The document states: “It is not allowed for a person who has no pledge of allegiance on his neck to the caliph to invest in an oil or gas field or what has arisen from their trajectory, but it is allowed besides that to produce derivatives after buying the crude products from the fields of the Islamic State, just as it is allowed to sell and deal in them inside and outside the state.
“It is not allowed to excavate for gold and antiquities except by expressed agreement from the resources department, and all transferred and stored materials will be confiscated for the interest of the treasury.”

Education
ISIS must “develop Islamic society on the basis of manners and on sharia”.
Another of its aims is “Raising a knowledgeable Islamic generation capable of bearing the ummah (nation) and its future without needing the expertises of the west”.

Despite strong opposition in Congress and the growing threat of terrorist attacks both at home and abroad, President Barack Obama continues to call for the closing of Guantanamo Bay.
In an interview with The Daily Signal, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., says the president is more fixated on fulfilling an ill-advised campaign promise than maintaining what Cotton believes is a safe, secure, and humane detention facility for unlawful combatants.
