Trump secures the win

A lot can happen between now and November, but from the looks of it, the next president of the United States is going to be Donald J. Trump. Like it or not, this outcome is just about set in stone. Hillary will need an absolutely miracle to win, as momentum has forcefully turned against her.

While these pages are typically reserved for market commentary, politics inevitably influence stock prices, both on benchmark and individual fronts. So let’s do our best to forget about our personal political leanings for a moment and think like intelligent and savvy investors. Let’s ask ourselves what is the most likely outcome of this presidential election as of today, because ultimately that outcome will reshuffle the market.

If you’ve been following the news this week, you know all too well the Democratic Party is falling apart. Donald Trump has taken the lead over Hillary in the general election polls for the first time since this race began. This recent overtaking is thanks in part to a post–Republican National Convention bump, but the real damage has been dealt by what’s been an absolute dumpster fire of a Democratic Convention.

Let’s look at it all piece by piece. You can’t make this stuff up.

WikiLeaks Reveals Rigged System

Last week, WikiLeaks released tens of thousands of emails exposing DNC officials (particularly Debbie Wasserman Schultz) and staff of actively sabotaging the Bernie Sanders campaign. The emails clearly show DNC staffers conspiring in ways to deal with Bernie Sanders and his rising support. Rather than treating Sanders as a viable candidate, they wrote him off from the start and worked against him to ensure Clinton received the nomination.

Clinton and Schultz’s defenders will argue that it was in the best interest of the party because Bernie was “unelectable,” but the irony of all this is that the DNC’s actions will ultimately ensure a Republican win in November. The DNC has lost the trust of so many of its voters and has only managed to further the narrative of Clinton’s corruption.

In addition to the DNC being exposed for keeping Sanders down, the leaks include audio recordings that reveal a system of donor access control, where proximity to government officials, including Obama and Clinton, is sold to the highest bidder. This gives Trump an enormous amount of ammunition leading into the general election debates and is sure to turn off younger voters who adamantly want money out of politics.

In response to the leaks, the DNC did what they do best and shifted the blame by attempting to demonize their “enemies” on the right. Rather than distancing themselves from relevant parties in the emails, the Clinton campaign chose to point fingers at Trump for encouraging “espionage” after he made comments directed at suspected Russian hackers to expose Hillary’s emails.

Here’s the comment from Jake Sullivan, Clinton’s chief foreign policy adviser, in response to Trump’s comments.

This has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent. That’s not hyperbole, those are just the facts. This has gone from being a matter of curiosity, and a matter of politics, to being a national security issue.

Think about that for a second. Hillary sets up an insecure private server, plays off the fact it was a threat to national security, and now her campaign is effectively admitting that if the Russians were to find these emails, it would be a national security concern. Incredible.

Of course, no amount of finger pointing can distract from the reality that the Democratic Party isn’t particularly democratic. Here was Bernie’s response to the scandal, a sentiment you can be sure is shared by his supporters:

I told you a long time ago that the—that the DNC was not running a fair operation, that they were supporting Secretary Clinton. So what I suggested to be true six months ago turns out, in fact, to be true. I’m not shocked, but I am disappointed … What I also said many months ago is that, for a variety of reasons, Debbie Wasserman Schultz should not be chair of the DNC. And I think these emails reiterate that reason why she should not be chair. I think she should resign, period. And I think we need a new chair who is going to lead us in a very different direction.

Now, eventually, Wasserman did resign, but what comes next is simply dumbfounding.

Bernie Bots Set Fire to DNC

Hillary Clinton has made some absolutely terrible decisions in this election cycle. From a strategic standpoint, the incompetence of her campaign seems to know no bounds. It should have been obvious that the progressives were prepared to turn on the DNC, but nothing was done to appease what’s been the most unruly voter block in this entire campaign.

Following the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz as DNC Chairwoman, Hillary made the baffling decision to hire Debbie as the honorary chair of her campaign. This all happened within an hour of her stepping down. I’m not making this up.

Needless to say, the Bernie Bots felt completely betrayed. The immediate hiring of Schultz was a slap in the face to anyone who voted for Sanders… all 13 million of them, and 43% of the popular vote.

Here’s a statement from Florida Democratic Delegate Shane Harris:

Bernie supporters are very offended that the person we rightfully or wrongfully responsible for putting her thumb on the scale and tipped it in favor of someone we thought who was not the best candidate or stronger candidate to go up against Trump. You don’t employ bad behavior by employing her 32 minutes after she has stepped down as an admission that you did something wrong…

The decision to reward Wasserman Schultz in face of progressive anger is bound to prove one of the biggest missteps of Clinton’s campaign. It also goes to show how incredibly out of touch the Clinton campaign is with its prospective voter base. A June Bloomberg pollalready found that nearly half of Bernie Sanders supporters would not support Hillary Clinton, and nearly a quarter of them will vote for Donald Trump — yet she goes ahead and does this.

In typical fashion, the progressive crowd did what they do best and protested furiously. Wasserman was booed into submission at a pre-convention conference, forcing her to pass her gavel duty on to Stephanie Rawlings Blake and eventually resign. The once-beloved Elizabeth Warren was heckled with chants of “We trusted you!” Hillary was forced to raise her voice over audible booing during her speech. Even Bernie was turned on and shunned by the progressive crowd after urging them to support Hillary.

At one point, Bernie delegates staged a walkout, and the DNC responded by hiring seat-fillers to make the party look more unified than it truly is. To top it all off, Bernie will be returning to Congress as an independent, effectively abandoning the Democratic Party altogether. The lack of unity on the left is palpable, and you can be relatively certain its disenchanted progressive base will not turn out to vote in November as they had for Obama in elections prior.

Julian Assange Promises to Dismantle Clinton Campaign

The timing of the exposed DNC emails was obviously no coincidence. Someone has it out for Hillary, and they know what they’re doing. The DNC will try to tell you it’s a Putin–Trump conspiracy, but the man who really holds the cards is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Julian Assange knows who the sources are but will neither confirm not deny whether it was Russia. If you read between the lines, though, Assange seems to be strongly suggesting that it is not Russia but rather another party. Earlier this week, Assange remarked to CNN:

Perhaps one day the source or sources will step forward and that might be an interesting moment some people may have egg on their faces…. It raises questions about the natural instincts of Clinton that when confronted with a serious domestic political scandal, she tries to blame the Russians, blame the Chinese, et cetera.

Speculation on the source of the hacks aside, one thing is perfectly clear: Julian Assange considers Clinton a personal enemy and is carefully timing the release of these documents to influence the election against her favor.

“We do see her as a bit of a problem for freedom of the press more generally,” Mr. Assange said in a June interview, proceeding to label Clinton a “liberal war hawk.”

It’s reasonable to believe — and in fact entirely likely — that Assange is saving the most damaging material for the days leading up to election. After all, this would have the most effect, and it is under the Obama administration that Assange himself is being indicted. If this is the case, the Clinton campaign will have virtually no path to effective damage control. Until November, this arguably makes Mr. Assange the single most powerful man in the world, as he effectively controls the fate of the U.S. presidential election.

When asked about what other information he has, Assange stated that he has “a lot more material” on Clinton relating to the election, and suggested the information revealed will “provide enough evidence” for her indictment.

Only time will tell exactly what kind of dirt on Clinton will be revealed, but it seems quite likely the presidential hopeful will have no recourse so long as Assange isn’t bluffing. Considering an already divided and disenchanted Democratic Party, a Trump presidency seems pretty much inevitable.

What This All Means for the Market

As voters, I’m sure you all will have mixed opinions on all this, and that’s perfectly fine. As investors, though, you’d be best off to stay objective, because if and when Trump wins the White House, there will be a few obvious investment opportunities to take part in.

For one, Trump has spoken on several different occasions about ending the war on drugs to take money out of the hands of the drug “czars.” Trump has also stated we’re losing the war on drugs, and we would have to legalize drugs to win that war. Simply put, Trump in the Oval Office means big bucks for the marijuana industry and is likely to spark enormous returns for marijuana stocks.

Jointly, there will be the issue of erecting a wall along the south border. If put into action, Trump’s wall would be the single largest U.S. infrastructure project since the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. Total cost of the wall would reach an estimated $25 billion, and thatmoney will filter right into the public companies responsible for its construction — and their investors.

At the very least, speculation within these markets will drive up the prices of specific/related stocks as the election nears. There are a number of stocks to bet on for a Clinton win as well, but at this point, the proper bet should be clear.

Until next time,

JS Sig

Report Shows How Concealed Carry Makes America Safer

Must-Read Report Shows How Concealed Carry Makes America Safer

(Photo: Crime Prevention Research Center)

Even though our right to keep and bear arms is protected by our Constitution, statistics matter in the debate over gun ownership.  It’s just the world we live in.  Sure, one can make an argument that one’s fundamental right to protect oneself shouldn’t be tied to crime statistics — my individual right to protect myself, my family and my property exists regardless of how high or low crime rates are —  but as long as there are those hellbent on taking away our Second Amendment rights statistics will always come into play when the debate heats up.

The good news, of course, is that the statistics and the facts are on our side.  We have empirical data to demonstrate that responsible gun ownership has a net positive effect on society.  Plainly stated, more law-abiding citizens responsibly exercising their Second Amendment rights generally makes the country a safer place.

New evidence of this phenomenon comes courtesy of a report put together by economist John Lott, Jr. the president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, a research and education organization dedicated to conducting academic quality research on the relationship between laws regulating the ownership or use of guns, crime, and public safety.

The 41-page report, titled, “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States: 2016,” comes to the following conclusions about gun ownership, specifically, the right to carry, and its effect on society:

  • During President Obama’s administration, the number of concealed handgun permits has soared to over 14.5 million – a 215% increase since 2007.
  • The increase in the number of concealed handgun permits last year set another record, increasing by 1.73 million. That is slightly greater than previous record of 1.69 million set the last year.
  • 6.06% of the total adult population has a permit.
  • In ten states, more than 10% of adults have concealed handgun permits. Indiana has the highest rate — 15%. South Dakota is close behind with 14.7%.
  • Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas each have over a million residents who are active permit holders.
  • In another 11 states, a permit is no longer required to carry in all or virtually all of the state. Thus the growth in permits does not provide a full picture of the overall increase in concealed carry.
  • Between 2012 and 2016, in states that provide data by gender, the number of women with permits has increased twice as quickly as the number of men with permits.
  • Some evidence suggests that permit-holding is increasing about 75% more quickly among minorities than among whites.
  • Between 2007 and 2015, murder rates fell from 5.6 to 4.7 (preliminary estimate) per 100,000 This represents a 16% drop. Overall violent crime fell by 18 percent. Meanwhile, the percentage of adults with permits has soared by 190%.
  • Regression estimates show a significant association between increased permit ownership and a drop in murder and violent crime rates. Each one percentage point increase in rates of permit-holding is associated with a roughly 2.5 percent drop in the murder rate. This holds true even after accounting for the number of police per capita, demographics, and the percentage of the population that is incarcerated,
  • Concealed handgun permit holders are extremely law-abiding. In Florida and Texas, permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at one-sixth of the rate at which police officers are convicted.

While it’s wonderful to hear that more than 14 million Americans have obtained a permit to carry concealed, the real takeaway from this report, the point that bears repeating, is that “each percentage point increase in rates of permit-holding is associated with a roughly 2.5 percent drop in the murder rate.”

More concealed carriers have the potential to reduce crime and make the country a safer place.  As we so often say, an armed society is a polite society.  Now, that’s a counter-intuitive proposition for gun-grabbers because they ultimately believe that firearms are inherently evil and that the mere presence of them makes society a more dangerous place.

“I think that we’ve got to reign in what has become an almost article of faith that anybody can have a gun anywhere, anytime. And I don’t believe that is in the best interest of the vast majority of people. . . . carrying guns in public places. . . .” said Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at the National Council for Behavioral Health on May 6, 2016.

But when one looks at the data, as presented by the CPRC, it becomes abundantly clear that guns are good for the vast majority of people.

Now skeptics will argue that correlation doesn’t equal causation, which is true in the sense that there are many factors that influence crime rates and to conclude that concealed carry is solely responsible for a reduction in crime rates is an untenable position, however, what we can say for sure is that more concealed carriers do not increase crime rates.  In other words, we — the law-abiding gun owners and our millions and millions of guns — are not the problem.  If anything, we are part of the solution to the thugs, drug dealers and evildoers responsible for the violence in this country.

To bolster the point that we are not the problem, the report noted that concealed carriers are extremely lawful people, and that in Florida and Texas, “permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at one-sixth of the rate at which police officers are convicted.”

So, there you have it.  More evidence that gun ownership, via concealed carry, is good for this country.  Now, if we can only spread the word.  That’s the real issue the gun community faces, convincing the non-gun owning public that we are not the problem, rather we are part of the solution.  We have the facts, we just need to get them out there to the mainstream.  So, please, share this report with your non-gun owning friends and family.  Get the word out.

Hillary Tells DNC: ‘I’m Not Here to Take Away Your Guns’

Hillary Tells DNC: ‘I’m Not Here to Take Away Your Guns’

During her July 28 speech to the DNC, Hillary Clinton said, “I’m not here to take away your guns” and “I’m not here to repeal the 2nd Amendment.”

She has spent the last few months of her campaign trying to refute claims that she will do both if elected.

Standing in front of the DNC, Clinton said she was not going to take guns or repeal the 2nd Amendment but stressed that “the gun lobby” needs to be confronted and that more gun control is needed.

She did not provide specifics, but she hinted toward an “assault weapons” ban when she talked about police officers being “outgunned by criminals.” And she also hinted toward the passage of universal background checks and adding the no-fly list to the NICS system when she said she would work “with responsible gun owners to pass common-sense reforms and keep guns out of the hands of criminals, terrorists, and all others who would do us harm.”

Gun Control has been a reoccurring theme throughout he Clinton campaign and in October 2015 she assured voters she would institute new controls by executive fiat if Congress refuses to play along. In addition to her consistent push for an “assault weapons” ban and universal background checks, the new controls Clinton wants include more regulations on gun shows, online sales, and Federal Firearm License holders (FFLs). She has also made it abundantly clear that she wants victims of gun crime to be able to sue gun makers and sellers and she wants to extend the amount of time the FBI has to do a background check, thereby changing checks from instant to indefinite.

On October 16 she also said an Australian-style gun ban was “worth looking at” for gun policy in America.

But at the DNC she assured attendees, “I’m not here to take away your guns.”

ISRA Thursday Bulletin – July 28, 2016

The Republican Convention is over and the fact that Donald Trump is the nominee is old news.  More interesting is the media inducted uproar prior to the convention over Ohioan’s exercising their constitutional rights by carrying both concealed and open during the convention.  The media predicted everything from blood in the streets to the zombie apocalypse.  Nothing happened, probably because many people were carrying.  The media, what a bunch of cupcakes.
This is the 150th anniversary of Winchester. A few months back I mentioned this is also the 200th anniversary of Remington, so I need to give a salute to Winchester.  When we think of franchises, we think of McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and others.  In the 1920’s and 30’s, Winchester had over 6000 franchise stores in the United States.  Winchester made all kinds of things.  I have a pair of Winchester ice skates and a friend of mine has Winchester pliers.  There were many more things and some of the displays were custom made for a stores.  Some of it is quite valuable.
While at the Cody Museum, I watched a film of the famous Herb Parsons, one of Winchester “trick shooters”.  Herb was a great marksman.  He was the actual shooter in the famous “Winchester 73”, starring Jimmy Stewart.  Herb could actually do all those shots attributed to Stewart’s character.   Herb’s films are available on line.
The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is on.  Hillary’s running mate, Tim Kaine, is a gun control “darling” and will push their anti-gun agenda on the stump and, if elected, will lead the charge in the Senate.  In the “It’s not over until the fat lady sings” department, Russian Intelligence apparently hacked into the DNC computers and blew the whistle on the anti- Sanders subterfuge inside the DNC.  Maybe the FBI should call Vladimir Putin and see if he has Hillary’s missing 33,000 emails, just a thought.  I don’t know why everyone is so worried if all they contain are Hillary’s yoga schedule and Chelsea’s wedding plans.
We have been told that ISIS is on the run and that everything will be just fine if we Let Syrian refugees and other Islamic immigrants into the United States.  No one is pointing out that in the last 10 days, Germany suffered four terrorist attacks and France just had an 85-year-old priest’s throat cut.  Everything was perpetrated by Islamic immigrants or recent refugees.  Worldwide, as of July 25, there have been 1003 terrorist attacks, killing in excess of 3000 people.  I missed those figures on the nightly news.  Did you see them?
The European police departments are publicly admitting they are overwhelmed.  The same thing is going to happen here if we let it.  The situation is already bad and it will only get worse.  I suggest that you prepare yourself with more training.  If you live near the ISRA Range, look into the classes and leagues offered for your education and training. Take advantage of them as soon as possible.

Don’t Comply With Obama’s Mandate for muli-sex bathrooms and locker rooms

What about the privacy rights of those that don’t feel comfortable being naked in front of the opposite sex in Grade School and High School. I bet their are many women in college that don’t want to shower in public with men looking on.

Illinois Family Institute to State Board of Education: Don’t Comply With Obama’s Locker Room Mandate

At the DNC Convention, Michelle Obama made this presumptuous statement:

[T]his election and every election is about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives.

Her husband’s non-legal attempt to do just that—to exploit his power to shape the lives of other people’s children—is no more evident than in his command to every government school to allow boys in girls’ locker rooms and restrooms and vice versa. His order, delivered via the Department of Education’s Office for (un)Civil Rights, commands schools to allow students who reject their sex to use opposite-sex restrooms and locker rooms and to do so based on nothing more than their claim that they feel like the opposite sex—or both sexes.

In order to attempt to undergird this diktat with a patina of legal authority, the Office for (un)Civil Rights falsely claims that when Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on “sex,” the word “sex” includes “gender identity.” If this redefinition of the word “sex” by unelected government bureaucrats prevails, schools will be prohibited from discriminating based on either sex or “gender identity” (i.e., subjective feelings about one’s objective, immutable sex) in even school facilities in which intimate, personal activities take place.

So, what will this mean? It means that eventually all restrooms, locker rooms, and showers will be co-ed. There will remain no way for schools to prevent non-“trans” students (i.e., normal students) from using opposite-sex locker rooms or showers. Schools will not be able to prohibit boys who accept their sex (i.e., normal boys) from using girls’ locker rooms based on the fact that they are objectively male because schools will have already have allowed other objectively male persons in girls’ locker rooms. And schools will not be able to prohibit normal boys (aka “cisgender” boys) from using girls’ locker rooms, showers, or restrooms because they are not “trans,” because that would constitute discrimination based on “gender identity.” The end game is the obliteration of all public recognition and accommodation of sex differences even in private areas.

If Obama’s pernicious goal is realized, people of faith will no longer be able to justify keeping their children in public schools. Parents cannot ethically place their children under the tutelage of teachers, administrators, and school board members so foolish that they don’t understand the meaning of biological sex and who will not protect the physical privacy of children and teens.

In the service of preventing this abuse of power and the destruction of respect for sex differences in our taxpayer-funded schools, IFI has sent this letter of warning, written by attorney Jason Craddock, to the Illinois State Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Tony Smith and Board Chairman Rev. James Meeks

“…People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.”

Chairman’s Comments 7/29/2016

“The Budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome will become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.”

local Government re-distribution

Cicero, 55 BC

This quote, from very ancient times, is more appropriate now than ever.

The events happening since July 4th, the celebration of our great nation, have been marred since. First, I think it’s unacceptable that Loretta Lynch would even meet with Bill Clinton with all that is happening with the extremely sensitive investigations involving his wife; it is without precedence and completely unethical. With that gross lapse in judgment, anyone ethical would resign and, if it had been a Republican that did such a thing, the press would hound them mercilessly until they did. Or, an ethical president would demand their resignation. But, of course, with this current administration, we have neither.

The next amazing happening was two or three days later when it was announced that no more of Hillary’s emails would be forthcoming for twenty-seven months! How and why did this happen and why so long a time? And why the completely coincidental timing of that move? Then, the next amazing statements come from the FBI head that Hillary Clinton was extremely careless, but that no reasonable prosecutor would charge her. This was beyond comprehension to both sides of the aisle and liberals, as well as conservatives, were shocked. Even some liberal commentators said so. It is rumored that many FBI agents involved in the process are very upset. Hillary’s ineptness, corruption and lying are seemingly above the law. Their absolute power is simply amazing…and very scary. Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York and former Attorney General of New York, was very upset by what was said by the FBI. He said there is no difference between extreme carelessness and gross negligence. And, that is the perfect situation for a grand jury to decide and any reasonable prosecutor would have decided that.

The next extremely sad and ultimately almost terrifying incident was the horrific shooting of twelve police officers and killing of five of them by again extremists. It appears, as of now, that it was not Jihadists, but racists; blacks hating both whites and cops. I am sure there are many Black Lives Matter members who are genuine and want to make the world a better place but unfortunately, there are many who are true racists who are intent on dividing our races and want to murder innocent people. All too often these type of people move into places of leadership because of their drive and determination. This has happened throughout history. Adolph Hitler is just one such example where a bad person got into a tyrannical leadership position.

The President, who has the unique ability as the first black President to show that blacks can be very successful, should have race relations at an all-time high. Instead, he seems to have a very defined agenda to worsen relations. Every time there is a racial situation, I think that he has said exactly the wrong things to relieve tensions. He seems intent on worsening them and is being rather successful at it. His great friends and all-too-frequent White House guests, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, are gleefully taking advantage of sad situations and making them much worse, while filling their pocketbooks. Compare this to when George Bush was President. His first actions were to make Colin Powell the Secretary of Defense and Condoleezza Rice the Secretary of State, the two most important jobs in his administration. Bush made a strong effort to make relations between blacks and whites, and all races, the best it had ever been. Now we have racial tension as bad as the 1960s for those of us who can remember that. The Obama administration is not going to say the cop killings were hate crimes because cops were killed, even though during negotiations with the killer, he stated he was killing all whites. Another white cop was shot three times by a black person in what was called an ambush the very next day and, again, he is not saying what it really was. Instead, as with the Muslim extremists killing Americans, he is not calling these incidents what they are. He is, instead, calling for more gun control!! Instead of asking for gun control, I think he should be asking for meetings between black and white leaders, between police and true black leaders, not race-baiters like Sharpton and Jackson.

Cicero was extremely smart person who lived over 2000 years ago. Unfortunately our leaders in the USA and many countries all across the world are paying no attention to him, nor the founders of our country. They are burdening us with an increasing debt problem. To make matters worse, we are giving money s (billions of dollars) to countries that continue to hate us and that promise to annihilate us. We give millions upon millions to illegal immigrants and to supposed refugees who are not even screened; and we give free health care to all of them. Because of all of this, we are not able to pay Social Security properly and, in a few years, it will be completely bankrupt. We can’t pay our military a fair salary and our military equipment is failing for lack of parts. Our frontline fighter planes have to take parts of one plane to keep another in the air.

I believe we currently have a President who is content to divide the nation, allow in undocumented refugees and allow the national debt to get to a point where China is buying so many US companies and land that we need to be prepared for very troubling times in the near future. And, who knows what will happen if the coming election allows a certain completely dishonest and unethical woman to become President? We must (more than ever) encourage those friends of ours to provide any support they can to legislators and a presidential candidate who support the Second Amendment… or else we will lose it completely like so many other countries have already. In the mean time, make sure you have plenty of ammunition, as there are lots of anti-gun people who are trying to make ammunition very difficult and expensive to purchase.

“New” students, including incoming 7th-graders and 8th-graders who are new to the district, will be directed to the gymnasium for a brief presentation on dress code and school expectations. Afterward, they will have an opportunity to tour the building, find their classes, practice their hallway locker combinations and purchase gym uniforms or other Homer Junior High items.

Eighth-grade students who are not new to the district need not attend the orientation program in the gymnasium. They may tour the building and find their lockers after picking up their class schedules at the main entrance. Gym uniforms also will be available for purchase.

All junior high students, whether they are new to the district or not, will have their fall portraits taken and student I.D. cards issued at the Open House on Aug. 16.

While families are asked to adhere to the assigned orientation times, there will be some flexibility with Homer’s schedule.

“If it is not convenient for you and your family to attend the assigned orientation time, you may attend the other session,” said Homer Junior High Principal Troy Mitchell.

Butler School students raise $1,070.03 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Butler School students have big hearts and understand the value of helping others.

After hearing about the work St. Jude does to treat and defeat childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases, two fourth-graders took it upon themselves to start a fundraising campaign at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

They created an informational video, sharing stories about some of the children receiving treatment at St. Jude, and shared it with their classmates.

“At first, we didn’t think we would have enough time (to complete the fundraiser),” the students told the Board of Education on July 26.

But by the time school closed on June 3, they had raised $1,070.03 for the children’s research hospital — more than double their original goal of $500.

“They did all of this themselves,” said Butler School Principal Melissa Onesto who accompanied students to the Board of Education meeting where they shared their informational video and story.

“Thank you very much for an outstanding job,” Board President Barb Wilson told the students before presenting each one with a certificate.

Part of Butler School’s mission is to inspire students to become more globally aware citizens and show that their school CARES. That is:
