To Business Owners:

To help address the ongoing regional problem of business break-in’s in Will and Cook County, our Will County Sheriff’s team is again offering to visit any Homer Glen business that requests help in reviewing their safety and security measures. The Village of Homer Glen wants to help business owners be as safe and secure as possible.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office is ready to assist any business owner who would like to arrange for an onsite business visit from the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office can provide helpful information on how to make your place of business more secure against break-ins. As a regular precaution, all businesses should be diligent with their nightly cash deposits and not have cash onsite after business hours. Signs posted near registers and other visible locations (by rear doors, etc.) should make note that there is no cash in facilities after hours.

Poll Shows Large Amounts of Voters Undecided in Race for Illinois Governor

A poll conducted by the Battleground Polling Group found 45% of voters remain undecided in the race for the Republican nomination for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. This continues the trend from the first poll released in June by Battleground Polling Group, an independent polling group.

With 45% of voters undecided, current State Treasurer Dan Rutherford leads decided voters with 18% of likely voters, followed by current State Senator Bill Brady with 13%, with State Senator Kirk Dillard and businessman Bruce Raunner close behind, each with the support of 12% of likely voters.

“This early in the game, it is not unexpected for undecided to be leading the way in the race for the GOP nomination,” said Battleground Polling Group president Dennis Cook.

Among respondents who identified as members of a Tea Party organization, Bill Brady opens up a lead among decided voters, earning 29% of the vote.

Undecided voters also are leading the way in the contest for the Republican nomination for State Treasurer, with 60% of voters still undecided. Of voters who have made a decision, former House Minority Leader Tom Cross is opening up a lead over Dupage County Auditor Bob Grogan, with Mr. Cross earning the support of 27% of voters, and Mr. Grogan earning the support of 13% of voters.

“Certainly, Tom Cross is in a solid position as we move into the winter campaign season,” said Cook. “But, with 60% of voters still undecided, Bob Grogan still has room to pick up more support as the campaign moves into full swing.”

Among Tea Party members, Tom Cross expands his lead over Bob Grogan to 31% to 9%.

To obtain its results, Battleground surveyed 535 randomly selected registered voters who participated in each of the last three Republican Primary Elections through automated telephone calls and an online survey method. The margin of error for each survey is +/- 3.97 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. The Poll was conducted from November 3 – November 11.

WHICH CLASS DO I NEED?
This seems to be the most common question we hear. The new concealed carry law requires 16 hours of training but allows for certain exemptions.

Everyone will fall into one of the three following categories:
• Active or honorably discharged military personnel are required to complete a minimum of 8 hours of training.
• If you have not served in the military but have taken a firearms safety course, you may be exempt for 4 or 8 hours depending on the course. Please call Brian at 815-714-9757, and he will help to determine how many additional hours of training that the law requires.
• If you have not served in the military and have not had any other firearm training, the law requires that you complete 16 hours of training.

Homer taxes going up again

Contact people on these Boards and let them hear how you feel. If you can make the meetings great. Sign in to speak. There are very few people we elect that actually don’t want to tax us out of our homes. When taxes go up it is harder to sell your home and harder to make ends meet.
Shame on all those Board of people we voted in who don’t get it. They raise taxes because they can. They should follow the example of Jim Holland, Frankfort Mayor who cut the property tax again.
Homer 33C is planning to raise the Property Taxes just under 5% again, Tuesday December 17th at 7pm meeting at the Homer 33C School Dist. Office 158th and Bell next to the Jr. High. If you can make it please go and voice your opinion. You can also email the Board members

HERCULANEUM • About 145 employees of the Doe Run lead smelter have learned they will lose their jobs at the end of December because of the plant’s closure, the Doe Run Co. said Wednesday. An additional 73 contractor jobs also will be eliminated.

The job cuts were expected. The plant, which has operated for more than a century and is the lone remaining lead smelter in the United States, announced in 2010 that it will cease operations at the end of this year.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the company “made a business decision” to shut down the smelter instead of installing pollution control technologies needed to reduce sulfur dioxide and lead emissions as required by the Clean Air Act.

The Doe Run Co. announced last year that it had dropped plans to build a new lead processing facility in Herculaneum that would have used a new, cleaner lead production technology. The company cited the

$100 million project as too financially risky.

Employees were notified of their future with the company or of their impending layoff between Sept. 30 and Oct. 8 in face-to-face meetings, said Tammy Stankey, a company spokeswoman.

The company will keep about 75 employees into 2014 to operate its refinery and strip mill and to prepare the property “for closure and repurposing.” It expects to have transferred 43 employees to other Doe Run divisions by this year’s end, according to a company statement.

Some operations, such as the water treatment plant, will operate indefinitely, and a maintenance staff will remain to “maintain essential facilities,” the company said.

The company said it had been working with employees for months to help them transition to new roles and had set up a career center to help with resume writing, interviewing and job searches.

“We have a very talented workforce and encourage businesses looking for dedicated, hardworking and skilled employees to contact us,” Gary Hughes, general manager of the smelter, said in the statement.

“CLEAR PATH PROGRAM” FOR INMATE WORKERS
To keep the incarceration rate below national average for non-violent misdemeanant offenders and traffic offenders, an alternative type of sentencing is needed in Will County. This alternative category of sentencing will present the court system with a program that would allow judges to order manual labor of sentenced inmates, in lieu of extended jail time. The alternative sentencing will not only help the taxpayer by reducing inmate housing costs due to the sentence time being exchanged for manual labor, but also provide these low risk offenders an opportunity to learn life skills and repay the community.
The placement in this type of alternative sentencing must meet certain eligibility and the individual must agree to the terms and rules of the program. The sentenced inmate must be physically capable and able to work in all weather.
The sentenced inmate must also pay a one-time insurance fee and processing fee prior to participation in this program. The processing fee will be utilized to provide special clothing for both the job being performed and exposure to the elements/climate.
These sentenced individuals will work only in approved work settings for governmental institutions, or non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations. They will be supervised by sworn officers, and will operate five days a week. A civilian coordinator will provide management of the various job assignments throughout the community. Failure to meet the terms of the program or a break in the rules will result in spending the rest of their sentence in a general population setting with the full sentencing reinstated.
Inmates in this program who have not completed high school or attained a G.E.D. will be encouraged to participate in the G.E.D. program offered by the Support Services Division of the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
This program will provide a “Clear Path” for inmates to learn the responsibility of hard work, serving their sentence and providing a positive experience by giving something back to the community, and encouraged enrollment in the Sheriff’s G.E.D. program. Also contact with various charitable organizations could provide help for these individuals once they have completed their sentencing.
The “Clear Path Program” will be evaluated after one year to analyze the cost, benefits and savings resulting from the program.
A future contingency of this plan would allow individuals sentenced to probation/supervision, including hours of community service, to also participate in a plan of a similar environment.

Aerial Photos in Will County

Will County has in my opinion excessive regulations. An example is the use of Aerial Photos to initiate code violations. I have been trying since April to amend the Ordinance to not allow it. Finally in October I am getting movement and it will be going to a vote either in October or November.

LOCAL LEADERS DISCUSS MEDIANS PROPOSED FOR 159th STREET WITH STATE’S SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION

HOMER GLEN – A group of Will County officials who are worried about the size and length of the medians proposed for 159th Street went to Springfield on April 19 to speak with Secretary of Transportation Ann Schneider.
Will County Board members Steve Balich and Mike Fricilone, Homer Glen Trustees George Yukich and Mike Costa, and Homer Township Supervisor Pam Meyers made the trip with State Sen. Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) and State Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs). They were accompanied by Bob Schmidt, the owner of Homer Glen’s Wheel Go Camping and a representative of the Business Area Group of 159th, a merchants association.
They are concerned about the state’s plans to improve a seven-mile stretch of 159th Street between Interstate 355 and Will-Cook Road. The Illinois Department of Transportation’s project includes medians that cannot be crossed by vehicles.
“The raised medians are a safety hazard according to our emergency management authorities and fire districts. If they are installed, fire trucks will not be able to make U-turns on 159th Street, and emergency response time will be increased,” Balich said. “Local business owners also are concerned about how the medians will affect their livelihoods. The barriers will make it difficult for customers to access their businesses, and they might take their money and spend it in Orland Park instead.”
Omer Osman, the state’s Director of the Division of Highways and IDOT’s Chief Engineer, also attended the 40-minute meeting. At the conclusion, Schneider said she would direct IDOT to take a second look at the situation. She also told the group that she would contact them in two weeks.
“I would like to thank Senator Radogno and Representative Durkin for standing with our community,” Balich said.
